About

Who this is for

Students in Nepal planning U.S. academic study on an F-1 visa.

The official path

  1. Research schools and programs. Use EducationUSA and each school's official admissions pages for program, cost, funding, test, and deadline requirements.
  2. Apply to SEVP-certified schools. The State Department says the first step is applying to a SEVP-approved school.
  3. After acceptance, get the Form I-20. The school registers you in SEVIS and issues a Form I-20 after acceptance and required school processing.
  4. Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. Study in the States directs students to pay the fee through FMJfee.com after receiving the Form I-20.
  5. Complete the DS-160 and visa process. State lists the DS-160 confirmation, passport, fee receipt if required, photo, and signed Form I-20 among the required interview documents.
  6. Prepare for finances and academics questions. State says the consular officer may request academic records/test scores, intent to depart after study, and evidence of how you will pay educational, living, and travel costs.
  7. Travel within the allowed window. State says new F/M visas may be issued up to 365 days before the start date, but new students may not enter the United States more than 30 days before the start date.

Frequently asked

Can I get an F-1 visa before I have an I-20?
No. State says the SEVP-approved school issues Form I-20 after it accepts you and enters your information in SEVIS; you present the I-20 at the visa interview.
Is the SEVIS fee the same as the visa fee?
No. The I-901 SEVIS fee is separate and is paid through FMJfee.com after you receive Form I-20. State also lists the nonimmigrant visa application fee for the interview process.
How early can I enter the U.S.?
State says new F/M students may not enter more than 30 days before the course start date, even though new student visas may be issued up to 365 days before that date.
Do tests and financial documents matter?
Yes. Requirements vary by school, and State says consular officers may request academic records/test scores and evidence of how you will pay educational, living, and travel costs.
