About

Who this is for

Immigrants trying to figure out which public or subsidized health coverage they may qualify for.

The framework (confirm specifics — don't assume)

  • Medicaid — free/low-cost coverage based on low income, but eligibility also depends on immigration status and your state:
  • Many lawfully-present immigrants face a waiting period (commonly described as a "5-year bar") before qualifying for full Medicaid — with exceptions (e.g. children + pregnant people in many states, refugees/asylees, and others). States vary — some cover more.
  • Emergency Medicaid generally covers emergency care + labor/delivery regardless of immigration status (income permitting).
  • CHIP covers children more broadly in many states.
  • ACA marketplace (HealthCare.gov) — lawfully-present immigrants can generally buy marketplace plans and may get subsidies; notably, those in the Medicaid "waiting period" may qualify for marketplace subsidies instead. (Income still matters.)
  • Undocumented individuals are generally not eligible for federal Medicaid or marketplace coverage, but emergency Medicaid + community health centers remain available.

How to actually find out

  1. Use the HealthCare.gov screener — enter your household + income; it tells you whether you're routed to Medicaid/CHIP or to marketplace plans (with any subsidy estimate).
  2. Check your state's Medicaid site — states differ a lot (expansion, immigrant coverage, CHIP).
  3. Talk to a free navigator / assister — they help in person, in many languages, at no cost (ask for Nepali-language help).
  4. Meanwhile, use community health centers (sliding scale) so you're not going without care.

Frequently asked

I'm a green-card holder — can I get Medicaid?
Maybe — many lawfully-present immigrants face a waiting period with exceptions (kids/pregnant often covered sooner); check your state + the screener.
I'm in the waiting period — am I stuck?
Often you can get marketplace subsidies instead — the screener routes you.
Will using Medicaid/marketplace affect my immigration case?
This (public-charge) area has shifted — confirm current rules with an attorney/accredited nonprofit; emergency care, CHIP, and many programs are generally not counted. _(Verify at review.)_
I'm undocumented — any options?
Emergency Medicaid + community health centers; check state-specific programs.
