About

Who this is for

Newcomers with no US credit history who keep hitting "we need a credit score" — for apartments, car loans, or regular credit cards.

How US credit works (the short version)

A credit score is built mostly from:

  • Payment history — paying on time, every time (the biggest factor).
  • Utilization — how much of your available credit you use (keep it low).
  • Length of history — older accounts help, so start early and keep your first card open.

You do not need to carry a balance or pay interest to build credit — that's a costly myth. Pay in full each month.

Steps to start from nothing

  1. Open a secured credit card — you put down a refundable deposit that becomes your credit limit. Many banks/credit unions offer one, often the same bank where you have your account.
  2. Or become an authorized user on a trusted family member's older, well-managed card (their good history can help yours).
  3. Use it lightly — put one small recurring bill on it (a subscription, your phone bill).
  4. Pay the statement in full, on time, every month — set autopay so you never miss.
  5. Keep utilization low (well under your limit) and don't close your first card once it's open.
  6. Be patient — scoring timelines vary by scoring model and lender. Keep paying on time and using little of your limit; your file strengthens over time.

What to avoid

  • "Credit repair" / "boost your score fast" services that charge a fee — most of what they promise you can do yourself for free, and many are scams.
  • Carrying a balance to "build credit" — unnecessary and expensive; pay in full.
  • Applying for many cards at once — each application can ding your score; space them out.
  • Missing a payment — one missed payment hurts more than months of good behavior helped.

Frequently asked

Does my Nepal credit history transfer?
No — US credit starts fresh. That's why a secured card is the usual first step.
Will my bank account or debit card build credit?
No — only credit accounts that report to the bureaus do.
How long until I can rent/finance a car?
A credit score and an approval are different. Timing varies by scoring model, lender, and the data reported on your accounts. Before you apply, ask the landlord or lender what US credit history it requires.
Is a secured card "real"?
Yes — it reports like a normal card; many convert to a regular card later and refund your deposit.
