Why this matters in the US

Thanksgiving is one of the most actively observed US holidays in Nepalese diaspora households — partly because it shares structural DNA with Dashain (extended family, big meal, gratitude framing) and partly because the long weekend makes hosting and traveling feasible. Most Nepalese-American Thanksgivings are hybrid feasts — the turkey alongside a full Nepali spread of rice, dal, curries, achar, sweets. The result is often a more abundant table than either single-tradition version, and the blended menu has become a soft signature of Nepalese-American hospitality.

What's on the table

The canonical dishes — and where US Nepalese source the ingredients.

American

Roast turkey

The canonical Thanksgiving centerpiece. Nepali-spiced brines (timur, methi) increasingly common.

Nepali

Goat curry (khasi ko masu) (खसीको मासु)

Goat curry as the alternative or supplementary centerpiece — common in households that observe Thanksgiving but lean Nepalese.

Crossover

Sweet potato

Sweet potato bridges both traditions — appears as American casserole and Nepali roasted side.

American

Stuffing

Sometimes prepared with Nepali masala adaptations — fenugreek, jeera, mustard seed.

Nepali

Achar (अचार)

Pickled radish, mooli, or mixed-vegetable achar — the Nepali side that holds together a hybrid feast.

American

Pumpkin pie

The canonical Thanksgiving dessert. Some Nepalese-American hosts substitute or supplement with kheer or kasar.
