Janai Purnima

जनै पूर्णिमा
About
How it's observed
- 1
Replace the sacred thread (janai)
Brahmin and Chhetri men replace the cotton thread worn across the chest. Performed by a priest, ideally at a temple, after a ritual bath. In the US, performed at Hindu temples or in home pujas with a visiting priest.
- 2
Tie protective threads on siblings
Sisters tie a colored thread (rakhi) on their brother's right wrist for protection; brothers give a small gift in return. Observed across all communities — not limited to upper-caste men.
- 3
Eat kwati
The nine-bean sprouted soup is the cultural anchor that crosses all sub-traditions of the day. Eaten across nearly every Nepalese household on this day, regardless of which rituals are observed.
- 4
Receive blessed threads
Hindu temples distribute pre-blessed protective threads on Janai Purnima. Many US temples do the same — worth asking your local temple if they offer this on the day.
What's on the table
The canonical dishes — and where US Nepalese source the ingredients.
Kwati (nine-bean soup) (क्वाटी)
Nine-bean sprouted soup — the day's signature dish. Pre-mixed bean packets at most Nepali grocers; the beans need 2–3 days of soaking and sprouting before cooking.
Roasted soybeans
Seasoned with garlic and chili — a typical side alongside kwati.
Sel roti (सेल रोटी)
Festive sweet rice doughnut — often on the Janai Purnima table.
Steamed rice
Plain rice — the canonical accompaniment to kwati.
