Maha Shivaratri

महाशिवरात्री
About
How it's observed
- 1
Day-long fast
Strict observers fast from sunrise — water and milk only, or fruit-only. Broken with vegetarian prasad after the night prayer. Partial fasts are widely accepted.
- 2
Four prayer sessions through the night
Shiva temples perform prayer sessions every three hours through the night. Devotees doing the full observance attend all four; most participants attend one or two.
- 3
Ritual bathing of the lingam
The Shiva lingam is bathed with milk, water, honey, yogurt, ghee, and bilva leaves. Bilva is Shiva's particular plant — Indian grocers stock dried bilva specifically for this day.
- 4
Night-long chanting
Bhajans and chanting through the night. "Om Namah Shivaya" and the Mahamrityunjaya mantra are the universal chants of the day.
