About
Who this is for
Anyone who needs a U.S. criminal-record/background check for a foreign authority, employer, visa, adoption, marriage, residency, or Nepal-related process.
Start with the requester
Do not guess FBI vs state vs local. The foreign authority, employer, court, school, or agency tells you which clearance it needs, how recent it must be, whether it must be signed/sealed, and whether it must be authenticated for use abroad.
FBI Identity History Summary
The FBI Identity History Summary is the federal fingerprint-based record many foreign processes ask for. You can apply through the FBI process, and FBI-approved Channelers can receive fingerprints/data and expedite delivery of the FBI summary to the individual.
State or local checks
Some requesters ask for a state police, state repository, or local police clearance instead of or in addition to the FBI summary. Use the state/local process only if the requester asks for it.
Authentication for Nepal or another country
If the destination requires foreign-use authentication, follow the authentication/legalization route. For U.S.-issued documents going to Nepal, the Embassy's current attestation page directs applicants to notarization when needed, state authentication, federal authentication by the U.S. Department of State, and then Embassy authentication.
