About
What Holi is
Holi, also called Fagu Purnima in Nepal, is a spring festival associated with color, friendship, and the story of Prahlad and Holika. In Nepal, the hill and Kathmandu Valley observance is commonly followed by a Terai observance one day later.
Date note
Do not treat one Gregorian date as universal for Holi. UnitedSewa's internal Holi entry is still partial, so this guide does not rely on it as a final public calendar source. Current Nepali holiday calendars list Fagu Purnima and the Terai Holi day separately; use a current patro and the local organizer notice for U.S. events.
How diaspora events usually work
Public Holi events in the U.S. are often scheduled for a nearby weekend and may focus on music, dry colors, food vendors, and family activities. The event date, color rules, and venue restrictions depend on the organizer and the lease or park permit.
Practical etiquette
Use washable colors, protect eyes and skin, and ask before applying color to another person. Bring clothes and towels that can stain, and follow the venue's rules about water, cleanup, and parking.
