About
Who this is for
Nepali citizens in the United States who need someone in Nepal to handle legal proceedings or transactions through a Power of Attorney (??????????).
What the Embassy currently attests
The Embassy of Nepal says it attests Power of Attorney documents of Nepali nationals for legal proceedings in Nepali courts. Its FAQ says POA services at the Embassy are available only to people holding valid Nepali citizenship and a Nepali passport.
Current Embassy requirements
- Two copies of the POA document on traditional Nepali paper, prepared by a registered lawyer in Nepal.
- An application addressed to the Head of Mission by the POA giver.
- Original and copies of the POA giver's Nepali citizenship certificate and passport, plus a copy of the POA receiver's citizenship certificate.
- Recent passport-size photos of both the POA giver and receiver.
- Proof of the POA giver's U.S. status, such as Green Card or visa-status document.
- The POA giver must be physically present at the Embassy.
Extra documents depend on purpose
Property, divorce, vehicle, business/company, pension, and other POA types can need additional documents. For land sale, for example, the Embassy page lists land ownership certificate and land-revenue receipt copies. Get the Nepal lawyer/receiving office to draft the correct scope before the Embassy visit.
Appointment and fees
The Embassy FAQ requests appointment scheduling by email or prior email confirmation before visiting. It lists POA fee categories of $5 when the receiver is an own family member within three generations, otherwise $40, with current payment methods on the Embassy page.
