About

What Maghe Sankranti marks

Maghe Sankranti falls on the first day of Magh in the Nepali calendar and is associated with the sun's northward movement, winter foods, holy bathing, and family observance. Nepal Tourism Board describes foods such as sesame laddus, chaku, ghee, sweet potatoes, and yam or tarul.

Tharu Maghi

For many Tharu communities, Maghi is a major new-year festival. Public programs may include community gatherings, food, cultural dress, music, and dance, but the details are local and community-specific.

Date note

UnitedSewa's public calendar does not currently list Maghe Sankranti. For 2083 B.S., Hamro Patro and Edusanjal list Maghe Sankranti on Magh 1, and UnitedSewa's converter maps Magh 1, 2083 to January 15, 2027. Check the current patro and the local organizer for U.S. programs.

Planning in the diaspora

U.S. community events may be scheduled on a weekend and may combine cultural programming, food, and fundraising. Confirm whether the event is a general Maghe Sankranti gathering, a Tharu Maghi program, or both.

Frequently asked

Is Maghe Sankranti always in January?
It falls on Magh 1 in the Nepali calendar, usually in mid-January on the Gregorian calendar. For 2083 B.S., the UnitedSewa converter maps it to January 15, 2027.
Is Tharu Maghi the same as Maghe Sankranti?
They overlap on the calendar, but Tharu Maghi has its own community meaning and new-year observance. Follow the host community wording.
Why does this guide not link to a UnitedSewa calendar event?
UnitedSewa does not currently publish a Maghe Sankranti calendar entry, so this guide points readers to the converter, public holiday sources, and local organizers.
