About

What Tihar is

Tihar, also called Deepawali in Nepal, is a five-day festival of lights. Nepal Tourism Board describes the sequence as Kaag Tihar, Kukur Tihar, Gai Tihar with Laxmi Puja, Goru Tihar with Mha Puja in Newar communities, and Bhai Tika.

2026 date note

UnitedSewa's calendar lists Laxmi Puja on November 8, 2026. Hamro Patro lists Laxmi Puja on Kartik 22, 2083, which maps to November 8, 2026, and Bhai Tika on November 11, 2026. USEF-Nepal lists Tihar holidays in November 2026, including Bhai Tika on November 11. Tithi timing and local U.S. event dates may vary, so confirm the community notice.

How the diaspora celebrates

Families may light lamps, make rangoli, prepare sweets, play Deusi-Bhailo, and arrange Bhai Tika in person or by video. Community programs may combine Laxmi Puja, cultural performances, food, and fundraising on a weekend.

Apartment and neighborhood notes

Use LED lights where flames are not allowed, keep rangoli and candles clear of hallways, and check venue or building rules before hosting a program. If children or groups do Deusi-Bhailo, confirm permission and timing with neighbors or the host.
