About

Women's festival of fasting, song and dance honoring Shiva–Parvati.

Why this matters in the US

Teej has scaled into one of the largest diaspora-women community events of the year. Most major metros host one or more Teej programs across August and September — women gather in red, share a pre-fast feast or community meal, and dance for hours to Teej music. The religious frame (a fast for the husband's long life) is observed seriously by some women and treated as cultural-but-not-religious by many others. Both coexist at the same Teej events without conflict.

How it's observed

  1. 1

    Pre-fast feast (the night before)

On Teej eve, women gather at a parental home or community space for a heavy, rich meal — the energy reserve for the next day's fast. Often hosted at a community hall as a social event in its own right.

  2. 2

    Red attire

Red is the day's color — saree, lehenga, kurta, or any combination. Glass-bead necklaces and other ornaments traditionally worn by married women; unmarried women dress more freely but still in red.

  3. 3

    Day-long fast

Strict observers keep a waterless fast from sunrise to evening. Many diaspora women keep a partial fast (water and fruit) instead — both are accepted. The fast is broken at evening prayer or after the moon rises, depending on family tradition.

  4. 4

    Evening prayer (Shiva-Parvati puja)

Evening worship of Shiva and Parvati — the mythological core of the festival. Married women traditionally pray for the husband's long life; unmarried women for a worthy partner. Modern interpretations vary widely.

  5. 5

    Teej music and dancing

Hours of dancing to Teej music — the festival's most durable cultural product. Nepali music labels release new tracks every Teej season; the most-played songs are often the year's most-discussed cultural artifacts in Nepalese women's circles.

What's on the table

The canonical dishes — and where US Nepalese source the ingredients.

Centerpiece

Festive feast plate (दार)

The eve meal — a multi-dish plate of rice, several curries, sweets, fried items, yogurt, and fruit. In community settings often served buffet-style.

Sweet

Sel roti (सेल रोटी)

Festive sweet rice doughnut — often on the feast plate.

Sweet

Rice pudding (kheer) (खीर)

Energy-dense — well-suited as the carbohydrate load on the night before the fast.

Fast-day

Fruit

For partial-fast observers — fruit and water are commonly accepted breaks within the spirit of the fast.
