Biratnagar Metropolitan City has ordered all schools inside the city closed for two days from 24 September (Asoj 8), after the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecast heavy to very heavy rain across the country. The city's Educational Administration Division said the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and the general public, citing the possibility of rising water levels in rivers and canals, inundation of settlements and roads, and road blockages during the period. The notice went out late, so on the morning of 24 September many students reached school at the usual time and went home once they learned classes would not be held, and school administrations had been unsure since early morning whether to open or close.

What the city asked of schools

In the notice, issued by division chief Ramprasad Dhungel, the city asked schools to keep their buildings ready for use as temporary shelters for people affected by a disaster if needed, and to stay in coordination and contact with the metropolitan administration.

Other cities closed schools too

Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City suspended teaching at every community and institutional school in the city for two days, saying possible heavy rain could raise the risk of flooding and inundation. In Dang, the Tulsipur and Ghorahi sub-metropolitan cities gave all schools within their boundaries a two-day holiday, and Tulsipur mayor Tikaram Khadka said the decision followed the department's forecast of heavy rain and flooding. Pokhara Metropolitan City has also declared a two-day local holiday for schools because of the risks from the rainfall. School operators in Dang said the holiday decision came so late that it created management problems for schools.

What to watch

The department's forecast of heavy to very heavy rain runs from 24 to 27 September (Asoj 8 to 11), beyond the two days the Biratnagar closure covers. A forecast is not an outcome.
