Queens is the overwhelming center of New York City's Nepalese community: per the Asian American Federation's analysis of the 2011-2015 American Community Survey, 87% of Nepalese New Yorkers lived in Queens, the highest share of any borough. The 2019-2023 ACS counts 14,546 Nepalese residents citywide, with 13,100 in Queens — about 90% of the city's Nepalese residents, and among the largest Nepalese centers in the United States alongside Dallas-Fort Worth and Columbus, Ohio. Within the borough, the community concentrates in Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Sunnyside and Woodside.
Jackson Heights — the Roosevelt Avenue and 74th Street area around the 7 train, nicknamed 'Nepali Junction' — is the commercial and cultural heart, home to Nepali restaurants and shops and the United Sherpa Association Buddhist temple; in 2019, the city co-named the 75th Street and 31st Avenue intersection 'Mount Everest Way' to honor the community. In Woodside, Adhikaar, an immigrant women-led organization founded in 2005, reported serving more than 5,000 Nepali-speaking community members through direct support in 2023.
