Housing Renting your first US apartment (with no credit history) Most US landlords check a credit score you won't have yet — but newcomers get approved every day with a larger deposit, a co-signer, or proof of steady income. And the #1 rule: never send money before you've seen the place and signed a real lease.
Housing Setting up utilities + renter’s insurance (new place checklist) After you sign the lease, set up electricity + gas, water/trash (often via the landlord or city), internet, and renter's insurance — put the accounts in your name (it starts a payment history), and ask the landlord first what's already included so you don't double-pay.
