Karnali Yaks beat Biratnagar Kings in the final over of a Nepal Premier League (NPL) match at the Tribhuvan University cricket ground in Kirtipur on 29 October (Kartik 12).

  • Sompal won the toss and chose to field, and Biratnagar made 186 in their 20 overs, the highest total of this NPL season.
  • Karnali slumped to 57 for 5 in the chase.
  • Karnali needed 8 runs from the final over, bowled by Biratnagar captain Sandeep Lamichhane.
  • Biratnagar have lost both of their matches so far.

How Biratnagar built their total

Sompal won the toss and chose to field, and Biratnagar made 186 in their 20 overs, the highest total of this NPL season. Opener Lokesh Bam, dropped on 1, top-scored for them with 9 sixes in a 52-ball innings.

Sompal dismissed him in the 16th over, short of what would have been the NPL's maiden century by a Nepali player. Sompal's other wickets were Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews and Andre Russell.

How Karnali came back

Karnali slumped to 57 for 5 in the chase. Sompal then put on 66 with Pawan Sarraf and an unbeaten 64 with Gulshan Jha.

Sompal said after the match, "सुरुवात राम्रो हुन सकेन र हामीले लगातार विकेट गुमायौँ। तर, पवन सर्राफ र पछि गुल्सन झासँग साझेदारी भएपछि खेल जित्न सक्छौँ भन्ने विश्वास थियो" - the start was not good and we kept losing wickets, but after the partnerships with Pawan Sarraf and later Gulshan Jha we believed we could win.

The final over

Karnali needed 8 runs from the final over, bowled by Biratnagar captain Sandeep Lamichhane. Wicketkeeper Lokesh Bam dropped Gulshan in that over.

Late in the over, a mistake by Lokesh as Sompal set off for a run gave the batters an extra run and Karnali the win.

What went wrong for Biratnagar

Biratnagar have lost both of their matches so far. They also put down chances off Sompal during the chase.

Lamichhane admitted the fielding was poor: "फिल्डिङ कमजोर नै भयो। यस्तो प्रदर्शन कुनै पनि टोलीका लागि स्वीकार्य हुँदैन" - the fielding was indeed weak, and such a performance is not acceptable for any team.

Angelo Mathews said, "फिल्डिङ कमजोर रह्यो। क्याचले खेल जिताउँछ।

सोमपाल र गुल्शनले राम्रो खेले। नेपाली क्रिकेट राम्रो हातमा छ" - the fielding was weak, catches win matches, Sompal and Gulshan played well, and Nepali cricket is in good hands.
