वाग्लेले भारतीय कम्पनीहरूलाई लगानी गर्न र भारतीय मन्त्रीहरूलाई पुनर्निर्माणमा सहयोग गर्न आग्रह गरे Wagle asks Indian companies to invest and Indian ministers to support reconstruction
Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle told Indian industrialists at a trade and investment event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi that there are adequate opportunities for investment and trade in Nepal, and invited them to take part in the country's economic transformation. In Delhi, alongside regular bilateral engagements, he discussed the post-disaster reconstruction scenario with Indian ministers and sought possible Indian support for Nepal's reconstruction efforts. No Indian commitment of support and no amount of Indian investment has been reported.
What Wagle told the investors
He urged Indian companies already operating in Nepal to expand their investments and urged new investors to explore the Nepali market, saying Nepal offers significant investment potential in high-growth sectors. He named information technology, clean energy, high-value agriculture, tourism and manufacturing based on production partnerships as areas emerging as key drivers of Nepal's economy. He said the government was committed to speeding up policy reforms and to creating a more predictable, transparent and investment-friendly business atmosphere, and participants were told about tax reforms and investor-friendly initiatives aimed at removing investment barriers. "We want Indian businesspersons to regard Nepal not merely as a market but as a strategic partner for investment, production, value addition and integration into regional and global supply chains," Wagle said.
What he asked India for
The August 26 floods along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system devastated parts of Nepal, and the government is preparing to present scientific evidence and data to establish the role of climate change in the devastation. Wagle said his priority in his meetings with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was to express Nepal's gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian government and the Indian people for their support during the rescue and relief operations after the disaster. He said such disasters could have consequences not only for Nepal but also for neighbouring countries, including India.
How Nepal plans to pay
A report published in September said the government was weighing whether to seek grants or loans to finance the reconstruction of infrastructure and property destroyed by the Bhotekoshi floods. The same report said the National Planning Commission had begun work on a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment to ascertain the full extent of the damage and the cost of recovery, and that the assessment would form the basis for a planned donor conference.
What to watch
The reconstruction process is expected to begin after the completion of the post-disaster needs assessment. Wagle has returned home and said he will travel to Doha, Qatar, for the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, scheduled for September 28 and 29, where he plans to highlight Nepal's vulnerability to climate-induced disasters and the growing costs the country is facing.
